A backlink is a hyperlink from another website to a page on your website. Backlinks are also called inbound links or external links. For example, if an industry publication cites a Webolutions study and links to it, that link is a backlink to Webolutions.
Backlinks can send referral visitors directly to a website and can also contribute to search authority. Search engines can use links as signals about relationships, relevance, discovery, and the reputation of webpages.
Not all backlinks have equal value. A relevant editorial link from a respected website is generally more meaningful than hundreds of unrelated or automatically generated links. Context, source quality, placement, anchor text, and whether the link can be crawled all matter.
