What is a nofollow Link?

SEO

A nofollow link is a hyperlink that uses the rel="nofollow" attribute to indicate that the publisher does not want to provide a normal endorsement signal through the link. Google treats nofollow as a hint when determining how links should be understood for search.

Nofollow was originally introduced to help combat comment spam and untrusted links. Additional attributes now include rel="sponsored" for advertising or paid placements and rel="ugc" for user-generated content.

A nofollow link can still be valuable. People can click it, it can generate referral traffic and brand exposure, and it can be part of a natural backlink profile. Businesses should therefore avoid evaluating link opportunities solely according to whether they are “dofollow.”
