A sitemap is a file or page that organizes information about a website’s URLs. For SEO, the term most often refers to an XML sitemap, which provides search engines with a list of URLs the website wants them to discover and consider for indexing.
An XML sitemap can be especially useful for large websites, new websites, sites with frequently changing content, or sites where some important pages are difficult to discover through internal links. It can also provide metadata such as when a URL was last modified.
A sitemap does not guarantee that a page will be indexed or rank, and it should not replace good site architecture and internal linking. Ideally, important indexable pages should be discoverable naturally through the website as well as included in the XML sitemap.
Sitemaps are one component of technical SEO. They work alongside robots.txt, canonicalization, internal links, and Google Search Console to help manage how search engines access and understand a website.
