Why the Dentist Down the Street Beats the Big Dental Brands in Denver Search

Dental groups have the budgets, the brands and the websites. In Denver’s search results, they’re losing to the dentist down the street. Webolutions reviewed every page-one result for 12 searches Denver patients use to find a dentist, and compared search data for five multi-office dental groups and five independent Denver practices.

Of the 120 page-one positions, multi-office dental groups held one. Independent general and specialty practices held 86. And on non-branded searches that include "Denver," five independent practices earn an estimated $18,400 a month in search value, about seven times the $2,500 earned by five dental groups whose websites are worth more than 100 times as much overall.

This study is part of Webolutions’ Digital Performance Research series. We name organizations where their results offer a model worth following. Those with less favorable findings are described by category.

Key findings

  • Groups hold almost none of Denver’s page one. Of 120 page-one positions across 12 core Denver dental searches, one belonged to a multi-office dental group. Independent general practices held 60 and specialty practices 26.
  • One neighborhood practice out-earns five dental groups in Denver. CC Family Dentistry earns an estimated $9,900 a month from non-branded Denver searches, about four times as much as the five groups combined.
  • The groups’ Denver visibility is mostly their own name. Most of the value the groups earn from Denver searches comes from patients searching a brand plus a neighborhood, people who have already chosen them.
  • Groups win nationally and in AI answers. The largest national chain in the study now appears in more than 26,000 AI Overviews, and the national implant brand more than doubled its top-3 rankings. Across the five groups, AI Overview appearances rose about fivefold. Their strength is national, not neighborhood.
  • Small, focused sites win locally. The five independents have Authority Scores between 11 and 22; the groups score between 34 and 59. Pages built for specific services and neighborhoods outrank stronger domains.
  • Insurers, directories and Reddit take a fifth of page one. Delta Dental, Yelp, Zocdoc, 5280 Magazine, Reddit and others hold 24 of the 120 positions.

How we measured this market

We used three measures, from most local to most national.

Denver page one. We classified every organic result on page one for 12 searches a Denver patient might use, from "dentist denver" to "emergency dentist denver" and "invisalign denver": 120 positions in all. This shows who Denver patients actually see, and it doesn’t depend on any traffic estimate.

Denver search value. Organic Search Value estimates what a website’s unpaid search traffic would cost if it bought the same clicks through Google Ads. For each organization, we calculated the value of its rankings for non-branded searches that include "Denver," such as "dentist denver" or "invisalign denver," excluding searches for its own name. This compares national and local websites like for like, and it shows executives a number they notice: what their website is worth in the market that matters to them.

Website search value. The same estimate for each full website. For the groups, it covers every market they serve, so it measures national scale, not Denver demand.

Google’s map results, which appear above the organic results for most local dental searches, aren’t included in these counts; a group’s map visibility can be measured office by office.

Semrush top-10 organic results, US database, October 2026. The map pack, which appears above these results for most local searches, isn’t part of this sample.

Denver-area practices hold the #1 spot on 10 of the 12 searches; the other two go to a dental insurer and the CU Anschutz dental school. None of the #1 spots goes to a multi-office dental group. Insurers, directories, media and Reddit hold 24 of the 120 page-one positions, the dental school and health systems hold seven and out-of-market practices hold two. Specialty practices win their own categories: implant and denture centers for implants and dentures, endodontists for root canals and pediatric practices for children’s dentistry. The groups that do appear rank mid-page on general searches.

Five patterns behind the numbers

1. Budget doesn’t buy Denver’s page one

The five groups’ websites are worth about $6.3 million a month in estimated search value; the five independents’, about $56,000. Yet across 120 page-one positions for core Denver dental searches, multi-office groups held one, and on non-branded Denver searches the five independents earn about seven times as much as the five groups.

Group websites are built to serve many markets at once. Google rewards the page that best matches a Denver patient’s specific search, and that is often a local practice’s page about a specific service in a specific neighborhood.

2. Groups win nationally and in AI answers

The groups’ strength is real; it is just national. The largest national chain in the study (national dental chain A in the scorecard) holds nearly 28,000 top-3 rankings and appears in more than 26,000 AI Overviews, up from about 5,000 a year ago. The national implant brand more than doubled its top-3 rankings (1,484 to 3,324) and now appears in more than 2,100 AI Overviews. National dental chain B grew its top-3 rankings 76%, and the Colorado-founded dental chain grew its top-3 rankings 59% and tripled its AI Overview appearances. Across the five groups, AI Overview appearances rose about fivefold. AI citations concentrate among a few national brands in other markets too: in our study of mental health platforms, just two platforms account for 60% of the AI Overview citations we tracked.

That national and AI visibility is valuable. It just isn’t translating into the local results Denver patients see when they search for a dentist near them. Learn how Google’s AI search results are changing visibility.

3. Location pages that only capture the brand

Most of the value the groups earn from Denver searches comes from patients searching their brand plus a neighborhood. For one Colorado-founded chain, nearly all of its Denver search value comes from searches such as its name plus "Cherry Creek" or "downtown Denver." Another group earns about 60% of its total search value from its own name plus a city. Those location pages rank #1 for the brand, but rarely for the general searches new patients use, such as "dentist denver." A location page that lists an address, hours and a photo captures existing patients; a location page built around the services patients search for captures new ones.

4. Small, focused sites outrank stronger domains

The five independents have Authority Scores between 11 and 22. The five groups score between 34 and 59. Sloan’s Lake Dental ranks #1 for both "invisalign denver" and "teeth whitening denver" with an Authority Score of 12. CC Family Dentistry, with an Authority Score of 11, ranks #1 for "family dentist denver" and appears on page one for four of the 12 searches. In Webolutions’ framework, authority is the foundation, but relevant, specific pages decide who ranks. We found the same pattern in our study of Denver SaaS companies, where the two companies gaining ground built deep content around a focused topic.

5. Specialists win their specialty

Implant and denture centers win implant and denture searches, endodontists win root canals and pediatric practices win children’s dentistry. Patients searching for a specific treatment often want a specialist, and Google reflects that. General group websites that cover every service on one page compete poorly against practices that cover one service in depth.

What the winners did differently

CC Family Dentistry: owning the searches families use

CC Family Dentistry ranks #1 for "family dentist denver," #2 for "dentist denver" and on page one for "best dentist in denver" and "teeth whitening denver," more page-one appearances than any other practice in our scorecard. Its estimated traffic grew 75% in a year, and its website search value more than doubled, with an Authority Score of just 11. Its pages match the exact words Denver families search.

Sloan’s Lake Dental: winning high-value treatments

Sloan’s Lake Dental holds the #1 spot for two high-value cosmetic searches, "invisalign denver" and "teeth whitening denver," and also appears for "dentist denver." Its top-3 rankings more than quadrupled, from 12 to 56. Treatment pages that answer what a procedure involves, what it costs and why to choose this practice are doing the work.

Pearl Dentistry and Rino Dental: neighborhood practices growing fast

Pearl Dentistry nearly quadrupled its estimated traffic and appears on page one for Invisalign, cosmetic dentistry and teeth whitening. Rino Dental, named for its neighborhood, ranks #1 for "dentist denver" itself and nearly doubled its traffic. Both show how a practice rooted in a specific neighborhood can compete for the city’s broadest searches.

The common thread

The winners build pages around what Denver patients actually search, a specific treatment, a specific need or a specific neighborhood, rather than around their brand or their network of offices.

What this means for your marketing

Whether you lead marketing for a dental group, a multi-location practice or another healthcare organization with local offices, these findings point to five questions worth asking:

  1. Do you know where you appear in each local market? National traffic and value can look healthy while you’re missing from page one in the cities where your offices are. Measure local page-one presence office by office.
  2. Do your location pages capture new patients or only existing ones? If most of your location-page traffic comes from your brand name plus a city, those pages aren’t reaching patients who are still choosing a dentist.
  3. Does every core treatment have a strong, local page? Implants, Invisalign, whitening, emergency care and family dentistry are separate searches with separate winners.
  4. Are you measuring against the right competitors? A dental group’s real competition in each neighborhood is often the independent practice down the street, not another group.
  5. Is your AI visibility reaching local patients? Groups are earning AI Overview citations nationally. Make sure the pages AI tools cite also answer the local questions patients ask.

Our SEO services address questions 1 through 4, and our AI search optimization services address question 5. For clients, we track these measures continuously through our Performance Intelligence™ dashboards. Methodology

The organizations. For the page-one census, we classified all 120 top-10 organic results for 12 Denver dental searches by type: independent general practice, independent specialty practice (implant and denture centers, endodontists, orthodontists, pediatric and oral surgery practices), multi-office dental group, insurer or directory, dental school or health system, and out-of-market practice. Practices are classified by the brand they present to patients; some independently branded practices may be affiliated with a dental support organization. For the scorecard, we compared five multi-office dental groups serving Denver-area patients with five independent Denver practices that appear on page one; one practice with implausible traffic estimates in Semrush was excluded.

The data. All figures come from the Semrush US database. Current figures are live data pulled October 30, 2026; year-ago figures are from Semrush’s October 2025 snapshot. Measures include Organic Search Value, top-3 positions, AI Overview positions and Authority Score.

Website search value. Organic Search Value is Semrush’s estimate of what a website’s unpaid search traffic would cost to buy through Google Ads. For the groups, it covers all markets and includes searches for their own names, so it measures overall scale rather than Denver demand. Many dental groups’ brand searches are spread across hundreds of location names, so website value is reported in total. Denver search value is the estimated traffic × cost per click of each organization’s keywords containing "Denver," excluding searches for its own name; it doesn’t include searches for suburbs or "near me" searches, so it measures each organization’s presence in Denver-specific searches only.

Denver page-one presence. We reviewed Google’s top 10 organic results for 12 searches a Denver patient might use. An organization counts once per search, however many of its pages appear.

Limits. Organic Search Value is a modeled estimate, not revenue or appointments. Google’s map results vary by the searcher’s location and aren’t included in the page-one counts.

Frequently asked questions

Do dental groups or independent practices rank better in Denver search?

In our study of 12 core Denver dental searches, independent practices held 86 of the 120 page-one positions, and multi-office dental groups held one. Five independent practices also earn about seven times as much non-branded Denver search value as five dental groups, even though the groups’ websites carry more than 100 times as much search value overall.

Why do small dental practices outrank large dental groups locally?

Google ranks the page that best matches a patient’s specific search. Independent practices often have pages built around one treatment or one neighborhood, while group websites are built to serve many markets and often rank mainly for their own brand name.

How can a dental group improve its local search visibility?

Measure page-one presence in each market where you have offices, build location pages around the treatments patients search for, give core treatments their own detailed pages and compare yourself with the independent practices near each office. A Marketability Audit identifies exactly where a group’s authority, rankings and AI visibility break down.

Are AI Overviews affecting dental search?

Yes. Across the five groups in our study, AI Overview appearances rose about fivefold in a year. Groups with strong national content are being cited most often. Our complete guide to AI search optimization explains how to earn those citations.

The Webolutions perspective

For more than 30 years, since John Vachalek founded Webolutions in Denver in 1994, we have helped organizations adapt each time search changed the rules: the rise of Google, the shift to mobile, the arrival of local search and now AI-generated answers. Dental search shows how much local search still matters. Scale, brand and budget build national visibility, but a patient choosing a dentist chooses one near home, and Google answers with the practice that best matches that need in that neighborhood.

This study shows the patterns across one market. A Marketability Audit shows exactly where your organization stands within it. The audit is a confidential, in-depth engagement that compares your non-branded Organic Search Value year over year, benchmarks you against the competitors that matter most to your growth, office by office if needed, and pinpoints where your authority, rankings and AI visibility break down. You receive a prioritized plan to fix them.
