Duplicate content is identical or substantially similar content available at more than one URL, either within the same website or across different websites. Duplicate content can occur intentionally or through technical conditions such as URL parameters, filtered pages, HTTP/HTTPS versions, copied product descriptions, or multiple paths to the same content.
Duplicate content is not automatically a penalty. The SEO concern is that search engines may need to determine which version should be indexed and ranked, and ranking signals may become divided among competing URLs.
Common solutions include consolidating redundant pages, using canonical URLs, implementing appropriate 301 redirects, improving internal linking, and preventing unnecessary duplicate URLs from being generated.
See why duplicate content can be bad for SEO for the performance implications. Duplicate-content management is an important component of technical SEO.
