Keyword density is calculated by dividing the number of times a keyword appears on a page by the total number of words and multiplying by 100. For example, a phrase appearing 10 times in a 1,000-word page would have a keyword density of 1%.
However, there is no ideal keyword-density percentage that businesses should target for modern SEO. Repeating an exact phrase simply to reach a particular density can make content unnatural and may reduce quality. Search engines can understand related concepts, entities, synonyms, and context far beyond exact keyword repetition.
A better approach is to use the primary topic clearly in important locations—such as the title, main heading, introductory copy, and relevant subheadings—while answering the subject comprehensively in natural language. Related terminology should appear because it improves the explanation, not because a formula requires it.
This is part of effective on-page SEO. Start with sound keyword research, understand the searcher’s intent, and create the best useful answer rather than optimizing toward a density score.
